Celebrating the re-opening of our English Street branch

Our branch network remains at the heart of what we do and we are delighted that the major refurbishment of our flagship English Street branch in Carlisle is now complete following a six-figure investment.

We look forward to welcoming the people of Carlisle to what we hope will be an exciting addition to its central redevelopment.

The Key To The Refurb

In October 2018, the redevelopment of our English Street branch began with the opening of a pop-up research hub in the unit next door, designed to trial new ideas and gain customer feedback on what to include in the branch refurbishment.

The research found that although digital banking was increasingly popular for day-day transactions, many people still valued and often preferred the personal contact they had in branches where they could get help with important financial decisions.

The Grand Re-opening

Our English Street branch has been designed for our customers and built for our future.

Claire Deekes, the Society’s Chief Customer Officer , said: “This has been a significant investment that will allow us to continue to provide our outstanding service to our members in the heart of Carlisle. There’ll be more space, and the same friendly faces delivering our award-winning customer experience and service.”

Customers visiting the branch will find it easy to access the open-planned space where we will greet you and attend to your needs . Upstairs we have created some quieter spaces for more private conversations and on the top floor will be offices and a learning room.

The branch features environmental efficiencies (such as heat recovery ventilation, solar panels and low-energy lighting) to minimise its carbon footprint. Local contractors and building materials were used wherever possible and the design gives a clear nod to our Cumbrian roots. Green décor reflects the natural environment alongside brickwork, fabrics, and Lazonby sandstone, with reference to Cumbria’s industrial heritage in the oak floors and lacquered black steel. A stained-glass window inspired by the Lake District is a particular highlight, created by Brampton artist Alex Haynes.

While the refurbished branch will undoubtedly be fit for purpose in the modern world of banking, we’ve made every effort to create a branch that welcomes all of our customers – from those wishing to pop in, do their banking and head back out, to the customers that like to see us as a part of their week.
