Our values underpin who we are and what we stand for. They form the basis of how we approach our business, and they guide every decision we make. They ensure we do the right thing by our customers, communities, and colleagues, and help us to make a positive difference every day.
Cultural fit is just as important to us as technical competence and assessing against our core values plays a major role in our recruitment process. It’s just as much about you choosing us as us choosing you, so you’ll have the opportunity to get to know The Cumberland and the people that make it such a great place to work.
You may be asked to give examples from your previous experience which show how you have demonstrated each of our values in the past.
Before the interview, think carefully about each of our values and try to think of 2 or 3 recent examples where you can show you have put these into action:
When have you gone the extra mile to make sure a customer was happy?
Have you simplified a process or made something easier to understand for someone?
Is there a time you have had to take the lead on a piece of work or take on additional responsibility?
Think about how you plan and organise yourself when you are going through a busy period.
Have you worked successfully as part of a team to achieve a goal or objective? What was your individual contribution?
In any interview we believe preparation is the key to success. Coming to the interview with some great examples of how you’ve demonstrated our values will help you feel prepared and confident.
The best way to deliver answers to example-based questions is to use the STAR format:
Describe the situation or problem you were presented with.
What was the task you had to take on to resolve the situation of problem?
What action did you take? Describe what you did.
What was the outcome? What value did you add? How did you bring about a positive outcome?
We know that you’ll want to tell us all about yourself at the interview and we can’t wait to hear about what you’ve been doing. Feel free to write down some reminders and bring them along if you’d like to. All we ask is that you don’t read completely from your notes as we like to get an impression of the real you from our conversation.
