The first, and often hardest step, with managing debts is to acknowledge them and to not ignore the situation. We would recommend taking the 8 steps below to help manage your debt, but if you do have any questions please get in touch – we are here to help.

  1. Contact us

    If you think you might be getting into financial difficulties, get in touch and find out how we can help.

  2. Draw up a budget

    Make a list of your debts and evaluate your financial position, including your income, expenditure and how much you owe. There are a number of companies who can help you with this, including:

    IE Hub* - You can complete a budget planner via an independent third party, IE Hub.

    MoneyHelper - Provides helpful budgeting tools to support you with this.

  3. Maximise your income

    What are your most important financial commitments? Are there any ways you can maximise your money by cutting down on any non-essential spending? Could you help your monthly income by claiming any additional benefits or tax relief? More information about available benefits and tax relief can be found at the link below.

  4. Make us an offer

    If your debts are with the Cumberland you can make us an offer. After you have maximised your income and checked your budget talk through your options with the arrears team.

  5. Review your circumstances

    Continue to monitor and assess your financial position. If your financial circumstances change, either for better or worse, please let us know.

  6. Contact a specialist

    If you still have questions about managing your debt there are expert money advisers who can provide free additional support and advice.

  7. Contact all creditors

    Make sure all your creditors are aware of your financial situation as they may be able to offer help and support too.

  8. Review your overdraft

    If you have an unarranged overdrawn balance that you can’t repay, we can discuss this with you before you continue to use your current account.
