Susan’s Farm is a unique and inspiring organisation based in the north of Cumbria. Founded by its passionate owner Susan Aglionby, the farm has made a big impact in our region.
As well as supplying organic local produce, the farm provides hands-on learning opportunities to primary and secondary age children and those with special needs. The team also welcomes people with long term mental illness, ex-offenders and teenagers with behavioural problems.
Aged 75, Susan Aglionby remains the driving force behind the farm’s continued success – caring for the stock, overseeing paid and voluntary workers and managing the farm’s many visitors, all whilst running the business and raising vital awareness and support.
If you’ve been lucky enough to meet Susan, you’ll know that she’s dedicated to a more sustainable way of living and keen for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience it.
“I feel extremely privileged to be farming in one of the most beautiful corners of England, having really wished to be a farmer all my life. I wish to share my enthusiasm and knowledge of farming and food production with as many people as possible, of all ages and all backgrounds.”
When we first met Susan and learned more about her plans for the farm, we were keen to help in the most practical and sustainable way possible. Hearing about her daily challenge of juggling a vast amount of practical and organisational tasks, we were able to offer a community grant of £45,000, split over three years, enabling Susan to employ a part-time administrative assistant.
This donation is helping to sustain the farm, both now and in the future, and enabling Susan to focus on other essential tasks and enjoy spending more time with her family.
In March 2020, our marketing team took advantage of their annual community day to volunteer at the farm and help out with some important tasks including rebuilding a large chicken-proof fence and painting communal areas and the main classroom, ready for the hundreds of school children who visit every year.
We were happy to make a positive difference to the farm and support Susan in her efforts to make life brighter for people and communities in Cumbria.

Susan’s Farm has continued to support the local community during the Coronavirus pandemic, delivering home-cooked meals and checking in with those vulnerable and shielding – that’s why we have included Susan and her amazing team as part of our 100 Thank Yous campaign.
